Indian equities markets opened strong Monday and despite staying in the green throughout the morning went into a tailspin mid-afternoon to end deep in the red with a key index shedding more than 250 points to go below the psychologically important 9,000 mark once again.There was profit booking at the higher levels, analysts said.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) finished at 8,839.87, down 252.85 points or 2.78 percent from its close Friday last week at 9,092.72 points.

The broader-based 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), also showed a similar trend and closed at 2,682.90, down 72.2 points or 2.62 percent from its previous close Friday last week at 2,755.10 points.

The BSE midcap index closed at 2,846.47, down 39.29 points or 1.36 percent from its previous close Friday last week at 2,885.76 points.

Meanwhile the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistarte Court has remanded the three accused under CBI custody till December 2 for custodial interrogation, by considering the request of the CBI to get their custody.

Free software centre begins in Kerala

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said his Government proposed to open a 'Centre of Excellence' to integrate the activities of free software developers in the gobal arena. Addressing the valedictory session of the ''National Conference on Free Software--2008'' at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), he said the Centre, to be opened next month in Kochi, would help in furtherance and use of free software.He said an ''International Free Software' seminar would be held next month in Thiruvananthapuram to stress the importance of free software. As part of the Government's initiative to give an impetus to free software, it had been decided to use free software in e-governance and for the IT @ School project, Mr Achuthanandan said. ''The development of free software is imperative as it will symbolise the fight against monopolisation of knowledge,'' he noted. Speaking on the occasion, State Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem said IT had a major role to play in the protection, revival and development of the state public sector undertakings (PSUs).He said IT had helped capital become more fluid and free of local and national control, and enabled industries to reduce cost of management, production, marketing and movement of raw materials and produced goods. West Bengal IT Minister Debashish Das, who was present, said free software was essential to train the huge IT talent pool, which would be beneficial for the industries in the country.CUSAT Vice-Chancellor Dr Gagan Pratap said six universities in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had agreed to colloborate for furtherance and development of free software.A declaration adopted by the seminar includes procurement of free software by Government or Government organisations/undertakings, appeal to the Centre to issue a white paper on the implications of financial crisis in the IT sector in India, and on appeal to the UGC, Centre and State Governments to use free software both in curriculum framework and research.

Chandrayaan-1 Successfully Reaches its Operational Lunar Orbit

Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft has successfully reached its intended operational orbit at a height of about 100 km from the lunar surface. This followed a series of three orbit reduction manoeuvres conducted during the past three days by repeatedly firing the spacecraft's 440 Newton Liquid Engine. As part of these manoeuvres, the engine was fired for a cumulative duration of about sixteen minutes. As a result of these manoeuvres, the farthest point of Chandrayaan-1's orbit (aposelene) from the moon's surface was first reduced from 7,502 km to 255 km and finally to 100 km while the nearest point (periselene) was reduced from 200 km to 182 km and finally to 100 km.

With this, the carefully planned complex sequence of operations to carry Chandrayaan-1 from its initial Earth orbit to its intended operational lunar orbit with the use of its liquid engine has been successfully completed. During these operations, Chandrayaan-1's liquid engine built by Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Thiruvananthapuram, has been fired a total of ten times successfully. In its present operational orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft takes about two hours to go round the moon once. 

From this operational circular orbit of about 100 km height passing over the polar regions of the moon, it is intended to conduct chemical, mineralogical and photo geological mapping of the moon with Chandrayaan-1's 11 scientific instruments (payloads). Two of those 11 payloads – Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC) and Radiation Dose Monitor (RADOM) – have already been successfully switched ON. TMC has successfully taken the pictures of Earth and moon. 

The next major event of Chandrayaan-1 mission planned in the coming days is the release of Moon Impact Probe (MIP) from the spacecraft and its eventual hitting of the moon's surface. It may be recalled that after its successful launch by PSLV-C11 on October 22 into an initial Earth orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft proceeded towards moon and successfully entered into an elliptical orbit around that celestial body on November 8, 2008. Since its launch, the spacecraft's health and orbit have been continuously monitored from the Spacecraft Control Centre of ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) with critical support from antennas of Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu.

News-(08.11.08) India's Chandrayaan-1 entering the lunar orbit

Bangalore (PTI): India's maiden moon mission, Chandrayaan-1, on Saturday entered the tricky lunar orbit after scientists successfully carried out a most critical manaoeuvre, 18 days after it was fired into outer space.

TV projections gave Obama an unbeatable 333 to 156 lead in electoral votes even as results kept coming in. Obama, who would be America's first African American president, was projected the winner of the epic battle by CNN and ABC at 11 p.m. (9:30 a.m. IST Wed) with wins in crucial battleground states taking him over the 270 vote magic figure. As polls closed on the West coast, the Illinois senator was projected to win California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii as also Virginia, a state that hasn't voted for a Democratic president since 1964. On the road to victory Obama won Ohio, a key battleground in American presidential politics, and held off assaults by McCain in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, the top two states that Democrats won in 2004 and that McCain had fought to take back. Obama won victories across the northeast, sweeping every state in New England as well as New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and his home state of Illinois.

McCain won a number of southern states, including West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. The first exit polls out Tuesday put economy as by far the top issue on the minds of voters. Sixty-two percent of voters said the economy was the most important issue. Iraq was the most important for 10 percent, and terrorism and healthcare were each the top issue for nine percent of voters. The economy had dominated the last leg of the campaign trail as Obama and McCain tried to convince voters that they are the best candidate to handle the financial crisis. Voters expressed excitement and pride in their country after casting their ballots Tuesday in what has proved to be a historic election. Poll workers reported high turnout across many parts of the country, and some voters waited hours to cast their ballots.
